The “flower of death” is a bold oxymoron. We are talking about the pyrethrum: a flower belonging to the asteraceae family, used for centuries as a natural insecticide. Pyrethrin, a substance which is found naturally in this flower, is the enemy of insects. And, unlike other insecticides on the market, pyrethrin has a very low content of harmful substances to mammals, does not penetrate the sap of plants and is ten times less toxic to aquatic organisms and soil, which makes it the main insecticide used in organic agriculture. Kenya was its largest producer and exporter, thanks to the quality and purity of its product. Yet, from the nearly thirty thousand tons produced in 1983, the harvest reached only two hundred tons in 2017. This is due to several causes, the first of which is the chemical synthesis that gave birth to the pyrethroids and that dethroned the natural product for an easier and less expensive production. Today we are witnessing the attempt of an ambitious rebirth of the sector, in a moment in which attention to the environment and the growing demand for organic food products have created a fertile ground in which to let this hope germinate.

 20 giugno 1980, vivo a Positano. Mi sono avvicinato alla fotografia per “colpa” della mia compagna, che si interessava di arti visive e plastiche. Era semplicemente un gioco, ma molto piacevole e congeniale. Mi sono affezionato al mezzo e innamorato dell’idea di poter esprimere, di potermi esprimere, di poter lasciare un messaggio. Il momento chiave è l’incontro con uno dei maestri norvegesi della fotografia: Morten Krogvold e della sua compagna di vita Tarand. Erano clienti di vecchia data del ristorante dove lavoravo. Per due settimane Morten ha vestito i panni di “Pablo Neruda” nel film con Massimo Troisi: “il Postino”. Dopo qualche anno ho creato Arkimedia Lab con Antonio Casola (Web Designer), un’agenzia che si occupa di comunicazione visiva ed editoria. Ho all’attivo la pubblicazione di 1 libro fotografico “ Peru”, in collaborazione con l’ambasciata Peruviana in Italia e “Stonewall the temple”, presentato in anteprima ad Orvieto nel 2017 grazie al supporto e la lungimiranza di FIOF. Stonewall ha avuto il patrocinio anche di Amnesty International, circa 40 mostre in tutta italia e mi ha aiutato ad ottenere il QIP, oltre a vincere numerosi premi (People di Lensculture, IPA Award). Nel 2020 sono stato il vincitore del Sony World Photo nella categoria Documentary Photography con il lavoro realizzato in Kenya: The Killing daisy, editor’s pick per Indipendent e pubblicato su NATGEO USA. Amante dell’antropologia, curioso di natura e spinto dalla voglia di raccontare prima a se stesso e poi agli altri le storie in cui si imbatte.
