Location: GROZNY – CECENIA

Facendo una passeggiata lungo Putin Prospect, la strada principale di Grozny, osservando attentamente le donne musulmane che escono dai centri di bellezza e gli uomini che guidano SUV nuovissimi, non è facile credere che meno di un decennio fa la città sia stata rasa al suolo dagli assalti aerei e di artiglieria russi. Ma dietro questa facciata restano l’odio e la disperazione profondi per le ferite della Cecenia. Né i bar alla moda né i manifesti di propaganda del leader ceceno Ramzan Kadyrov che compaiono un edificio sì e uno no possono nasconderli.

Uno strato alla volta, Grozny: Nine Cities svela la complessità della vita nella capitale cecena. Quasi trecentomila vite sono state distrutte nelle due recenti guerre. Mosca ha promesso di ricostruire questa società devastata e di conquistare i civili ceceni, ma la lealtà al Cremlino e il petrolio ceceno sembrano ora essere le sue uniche preoccupazioni. E con i carri armati russi nelle strade, i cittadini russi sono isolati e la polizia cecena arresta i civili coinvolti in qualsiasi protesta contro le autorità.

Eserciti di sostenitori cantano il nome del Presidente ceceno Ramzan, idolatrando il loro leader mentre i cittadini stremati dagli anni di combattimenti ricoprono i pavimenti delle loro nuove case di mattoni con tappeti dai colori vivaci, organizzano feste di matrimonio con folle di ospiti, cogliendo l’occasione per godersi momenti di felicità, prima che altri guai si riversino su questa terribile città.

ABOUT OLGA KRAVETS

A journalist by education, I initially picked up photography in search of means of expression alternative to words, as freedom of media in Russia where I grew up is pretty much non existent. Then filmmaking came naturally after that, a love from the first sight. I decided not to choose between the three mediums and combine them all for the benefit of the story, be it a week-long reportage or a long-term project.

I am fluent in English, Russian and French, have a working knowledge of Serbo-Croatian and Ukrainian and equally love working in countries where I do not speak the language.

ABOUT MARIA MORINA

Maria Morina is a Russian Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1982. She took part in exhibitions at the Le Radar gallery (Bayou, France, 2014), the Visual Culture Center (Kiev, 2015), in the Rencontres d’Arles festivals (Arles, France, 2018), Rencontres Internationales (Grand Palais, Paris, 2020), Garage Museum, Moscow, Russia (2021), 6th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, (Yekaterinburg, Russia, 2021) etc. She has directed the films Just Don’t Press Stop (2017) and Youth of Nizhny Tagil (2019). She is co-author of the cross-media project Grozny: Nine Cities (2009–2018). Finalist of The Aftermath Project grant (USA). Winner of the Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles (France) and the Prix Bayeux-Calvados Awards (France). Lives and works in St. Petersburg.

ABOUT  OKSANA YUSHKO

Oksana Yushko is a Moscow based photographer, multidisciplinary artist, curator, and educator. Her approach combines journalism, sociology, and anthropology, while her practice includes photography, video, sculpture and installations. Yushko’s research lies in the intersection of memory and post-trauma, artnetology, ecology and biopolitics. Her projects have been published in the media and exhibited in galleries throughout the world. Yushko has received numerous awards including 2021 European Press Prize, Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles 2017, Award of Excellence in NPPA Contest 2015, Prix Bayeux Calvados award 2014, BURN Award 2013, Lens Culture International Exposure Award 2011, among others.

Yushko’s works held in private and public collections in Russia, US, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, etc.
